12th Geography: Introduction to Syllabus

Introduction to Syllabus:

In the 11th standard we have learned Physical Geography, one of the main branches of geography. Physical Geography covers the study of four spheres- atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, lithosphere.

This year we are going to learn about Human Geography.

Human geography is the study of the changing relationship between the unresting man and the unstable earth”

               - Ellen Semple (She is an American geographer)

Human geography includes the study of inter-relationship among physical environment and manmade environment.

That’s why in the last year we firstly get to known with the elements of natural environment and this year will study about nature-human relationship.

Can you recall elements of natural environment or physical geography?

We have studied earth movements, weathering, erosion, climatic regions, global climatic regions, ocean resources, Indian ocean, biomes, disaster management. So, rocks, minerals, landforms, soil, plants, animals, atmosphere, erosional agents like rivers, winds, climate, weather, ocean and other water bodies etc. are elements of physical geography.

Similarly, this year we are going to study elements of human geography. What are the elements of human geography?

Whenever we say human, the first thing related to this is number of human beings i.e., population. Where does this population reside i.e. settlement, what they eat - i.e. agriculture, for earning human do economic activities, concept of a region and its development. So, these are the elements of human geography. It is important to study the cause-and-effect relationship between physical and human geography and for that in the last we will try to summarize the nature and scope of human geography.

I hope you will enjoy learning with me!

Wish you all the best!
